I try not to buy a lot of drinks at coffee shops throughout the year, but occasionally, I do like to treat myself to one of two lattes at Starbucks – either a peppermint mocha or a green tea latte. Today was one of those mornings where I was especially craving a matcha green tea latte. On my way to work, I stopped in at Starbucks and purchased a latte. The aroma of the latte was so satisfying and warming, I wasn’t even bothered by the chill in the air. Drinking green tea always transports me to tea time with my family on holiday weekends. I am aware it is cheaper to make my own version at home, but I do occasionally like to treat myself to a drink (or two) at Starbucks. After having a matcha green tea latte, I decided to make my own at home the very next day. It was the perfect drink to help me re-energize and prepare for the upcoming weekend.
Matcha Green Tea Latte
· 2 cups whole milk
· 1 tablespoon fine sugar
· 2 teabags of matcha green tea
· 2 packets of individual servings of pure matcha green tea
Directions:
1) Heat a pot to medium heat. Add the whole milk. Once the milk starts to heat up, turn the heat down to low. Add the fine sugar. Steep the matcha green tea bags in the pot for 3-5 minutes. Remove the tea bags. Add the packets of pure matcha green tea. Use a milk frother to whip air into the latte. Pour into two mugs and serve.
Takeaways: To make this a vegan friendly version, you can substitute the milk for coconut milk, soy milk, almond milk, or any non-dairy milk of your choice. I’ve made matcha green tea lattes using coconut milk and soy milk and these non-dairy versions were equally delicious.
