The first time I had chocolate covered potato chips was by accident. I was riding the red line from the loop back to my home in Chicago. On my way back, I stopped into a local Trader Joe’s to pick up groceries. As I was browsing through the shelves looking at chocolate covered treats, I noticed a light blue and yellow package labeled Milk Chocolate Covered Potato Chips. I knew I had to try it. I’ve always loved both chocolate and chips separately, but didn’t know how the two distinctly different treats would taste together. Instead of buying just one pack to try, I ended up buying two packs. My rationale was if it tasted good, I would have a back-up pack. If not, I could at least gift the pack of chips to someone else who may enjoy it. Lucky for me, the chips were super satisfying. They were sweet, crunchy, and had all of the makings of my favorite flavors and textures in an indulgent treat. They were sweet, salty, and crunchy. I missed the chips quite a bit after moving away from the conveniently located Trader Joe’s near my home in Chicago. Over the last few years, I have noticed many grocery stores selling Lay’s Wavy Original Potato Chips Dipped in Milk Chocolate. I’ve tried the version from Lay’s on two separate occasions and they were equally good. The only downside to the versions sold in stores is the amount of the chocolate on each potato chip. I would have enjoyed the chips more if they were halfway dipped in chocolate instead of fully covered in chocolate. Over the weekend, I made my own chocolate dipped potato chips using (sturdy) wavy plain potato chips, melted semisweet chocolate chips, sprinkles, and matcha green tea powder to add a festive touch.
Chocolate Dipped Potato Chips
· 1-ounce package wavy potato chips
· ½ cup semisweet chocolate chips
· Rainbow sprinkles
· Matcha green tea powder
Directions:
1) Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Set aside.
2) Pour the semisweet chocolate chips in a large microwave safe bowl. Place the bowl in the microwave and melt the chocolate chips in 15-second intervals until the chocolate chips are melted. In between the intervals, stir the chocolate chips to make sure they are fully melted.
3) Dip the chips, one at a time, in the chocolate until halfway through. Add some rainbow sprinkles on some chips, matcha green tea powder on others, and leave some with just melted chocolate.
4) Lay the chips on the parchment lined baking sheet. Let the chocolate dipped chips cool before eating.
Takeaways: You can substitute different types of chocolate chips depending on your taste. Milk chocolate or bittersweet chocolate are good alternatives. These chips also make for great holiday gifts.
